From later this year, you won't be able to update Apple iPhones with specific iOS operating systems.
Whatsapp, the popular messaging programme, will soon stop working on older iPhones.
The software will no longer support older versions of Apple's iOS, which means it will no longer work on iPhone models that cannot run the most recent version of iOS.
So, which iPhone models are affected, and when will the adjustment take place?
Here's everything you need to know about it.
When will the new policy take effect?
According to WhatsApp-watching site WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will stop working on iOS 10 and iOS 11 in October 2022.
According to WABetaInfo's most recent post, iPhone users running iOS 10 and iOS 11 are receiving a notification that states, "Update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp." After October 24, 2022, WhatsApp will no longer support this version of iOS." "Please go to Settings > General, then press Software Update to acquire the most recent iOS version," it continues.
Anyone who is still using one of those versions of the operating system is asked to update by the 24th of October to ensure that they can continue to use Whatsapp.
You will be unable to use Whatsapp, the world's most popular messaging service, if you have not upgraded your iOS by this date.
Which iPhone models are at risk?
WhatsApp will no longer work on iPhones older than the iPhone 5S as a result of the upgrade.
If you're still using an iPhone 5 or 5c, which are more than a decade old, you'll need to upgrade if you want to continue using Whatsapp.
Apple ceased supporting older iPhone models a long time ago, and they are no longer compatible with iOS 10. This indicates that they are operating without the latest software or security updates.
Apple is known for gradually dropping support for earlier iOS versions in order to make room for new features that require the faster processors that succeeding iPhones have delivered.
This has enraged some iPhone owners who see it as a ruse to force them to upgrade their smartphones.
However, some older iPhone models will continue to support Whatsapp.
If you have an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s that is eight or nine years old, you can still use WhatsApp because those devices can be updated.
What did Whatsapp have to say?
WhatsApp advises that it be installed on iPhones running iOS 12 or later.
The way people use smartphones is continuously changing, so we assess old hardware and software on a regular basis to make sure we're concentrating our efforts on the platforms where people use WhatsApp the most," a WhatsApp representative told Metro.
What will the future bring?
On Monday, June 6, the 2022 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference will kick off, and attendees may expect to discover more about the next iPhone, the iPhone 14, as well as the next iteration of the iOS operating system, iOS 16.
According to rumours, iOS 16 will not run with the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, or the original iPhone SE.
If you own one of these models, don't panic; WhatsApp will continue to work for the time being.
